Need advice - making tangible DVDs viewable online (for sale)

Hello, we have a website with around 30 DVDs that we sell.

If I wanted to create a new website in which we sell the same 30 DVDs, but viewable only online:

    1) Is it possible?
    2) Where should I start?

I know I would need a robust dedicated server, and streaming flash servers and all that but, how does one go about determining what is necessary for such and undertaking?

Can you clarify what you mean? When you say 'only viewable online' are you refering to only being able to access the website on a browser through a computer and not on a PDA or iPhone?

Right, I had not even thought of PDA or Iphone. Just on the regular www through a web browser. I determined that there's a total of 62 hours in all the DVDs. If I wanted to sell these as "online DVDs" instead of shipping tangible products, what would you recommend? I've been reading about streaming flash, but am not quite sure the best route to go..

you would likely need to `rip` the dvds and have them converted into a more web friendly highly compressed format, like divx etc. there are plenty of commercial programs that will do this.
this is certainly a fairly big task i must say.
in terms of controlling access that would be easy enough to set users & permissions for directories/folders etc. You could even post the videos on a private forum for example.
    hope this helps

Yes, I will have to convert each chapter of each DVD to the FLV format. It's not a big deal, just a lot of CPU processing time... Does anyone here know how to find those pre-made video on demand shopping cart systems? All the porn sites have them. That's essentially what I'd be doing, except it's not porn...

I don't know which kind of shopping cart porn sites use, but I would guess that it is just a regular one, that is, a database. This is just another product, like selling e-books and things like that. They pay, payment is confirmed, and they allowed to access content.

    Off Topic:

I see that you have visited quite a few of those sites

I actually have! I contacted a few of them to ask if they were using someone for hosting, some special platform for their front end, etc..

If I understand your question this is actually really easy.

    1) You sell membership - either lifetime or time based.
    2) You host with a streaming service that allows for memberships.

Depending on your volume, you can manually set up each membership or use a script to handle the memberships.
