    Bandwidth

Would someone be able to tell me how much bandwidth they're using for browsing a few pages...

It's quite rediculus, last week i used up 400mb (all just internet sites, not programs or mp3's or anything like that).

I'm just running a monitor on my connenction now called netgrid just out of interest.

I've only browsed a few pages at sitepoint at i've used like 500k already! (in the space of about 5 mins)... it might be correct, but when you are getting charged around $100 US / GB I want to make sure

    Thanks...

    mmmm...

300 hours of ULTRA high speed satellite internet access.

2 Gigabyte limit per month applies. Excess hours charged at $1.65/hour and excess traffic charged at 6c per MB between 4pm-1am and 2c per MB between 1am - 4pm.

    ~ $30US / month

    Thumbs down What ?

Hehe, that is even worse then !

I canīt believe it, if your having a room at my uni you get 5 Gig traffic for free, besides you can surf directly at university (in the pools) as long as you want and for free....which is well nice with 5x 155MBit

Thats what I was expecting -- at the uni itself (seperate from the college) I got $20 credit already in my account at the start of the year, i've been using it ever since i started uni, and so far i've only managed to get it down to $17.82

The worst thing is the strict rules they have! no messengers, no ftp, no POP mail, etc, etc...

nah -- surprisingly, sitepoint is fine to use (wouldn't be surprised if they blocked it though -- I'm kinda using up a fair bit of bandwidth )

we probably use almost 2GB/month over 56k. a bit more than 50MB/day average. right now, i've been connected for 4 hours and 45 minutes and have downloaded 36MB; uploaded 3.4MB.

And there you the prime example of why Universities are clamping down on access. When people abuse the system everyone gets hurt.

i remember when i was in college, they put in a t1 for one of the brand new premium dorms. some of my friends in there went crazy and burned up one of the routers by downloading way too many mp3s. after that, the university started implementing caps on bandwidth for everyone living in that dorm.

Yup, thatīs just the same as at my uni these days. Back in the days everything was allowed, nowadays almost every port is blocked, you gotta fill out forms to even get the ftp-port (21) open, besides all filesharing clients are blocked too....

And i can understand it, after all, the traffic isnīt free for the universities either, so why should they pay for someones entertainment (mp3s and all)....
