    Installing per Simply Rails 2

    HI:
I have tried installing Instant Rails 2.0 on my Vista 64-bit system (Home premium version)
Downloading, unzipping, and initial installation went fine.

On page 19 of the book:

    C:\InstantRails\rails_apps>gem update --system

Seemed to work - lots of messages - no errors

    C:\InstantRails\rails_apps>gem update
    ...
    Successfully installed rails-2.2.2
    Updating sqlite3-ruby
Building native extensions. This could take awhile...

    checking for sqlite3.h... no

    nmake
'nmake' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

Gem files will remain installed in C:/InstantRails/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/sqlite3-ruby-1.2.4 for inspection.

    Are there any suggestions?

I have been writing C, C#, HTML, Java, and Visual basic on this computer. This is my first attempt at Ruby.

I know this is an old thread but, it seems no one answered.

Apparently the latest version of SQLite doesn't have a Windows version. I think you have to do something like:

    Code:
    gem install sqlite3-ruby -v 1.2.3
Or, I installed everything through Cygwin, and then was able to install the latest version (that's not why I went through Cygwin, of course).

    Thanks for the response, devbanana.

I tried your suggestion and the install seemed to work, but then I tried the gem update command again and got the same error - it is trying to install sqlite3 version 1.2.4. Since the install stops at that point, I don't know what else is not being installed.

However, I have been able to make things work to at least try out some of the examples in the book. I'll continue to slog through and see what else happens.

    Thanks again.

    Hi,

I am following the setup instructions in Simply Rails 2. I am using a Windows machine, have used LAMP stack on this machine before, currently installed but not running at the moment. I downloaded and unzipped the files per the instructions, successfully started up Simply Rails and opened up a RUby console

When following the steps on pg. 19 -->

    C:\InstantRails\rails_apps>gem update --system
    Updating Gems...
ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::RemoteSource Exception)
    HTTP Response 403 fetching

Would really appreciate some help on this one!

    Thanks,
    Sid
