well i havent a problem with paying for quality. If cihost offers good quality and you, as a member, refer them to me then perhaps they are good.

But 20 a month was more than i hoped for (at least initially) however if i can figure out a way to pull in some money from the site (its not an e-commerce site) then id be more than happy to pay a grande monthly fee.

Does anyone have any tips for making money on a site that sells nothing?
i dont want you to pull all your tricks of the trade out for lil ole me but as a newbie, i sure could use a hand on learning the bidness of...well the business. =)

Being new to web design and having only mastered HTML, im now fixint to create my first online website.

Im needing a few things first though, a BBS, a script to do Polls, and a script that can take the info in my forms and email them to me.

Im VERY new to CGI (being that all i really know is HTML) so i need these scripts to be easy and/or WELL explained with documentation.

Can anyone refer me to a few good scripts that would be well suited for me?

i think i have the BBS but any ideas are nice.

Also, eventually i would like my forms input to be formatted and perhaps even added to the websites content without me even having to do it, but as for now i would just like to be able to recieve the forms input and manually put it up on the site.

    Thank you in advance

It would help if we knew a little about the environment you want to be working on. Do you want to be limited to perl? Are you on an NT box with ASP available or are you on a UNIX/LINUX box with PHP/MySQL available? This kind of information will make it easier for us to help out with any scripts we find useful.

Hmm, well im building the site on my computer still and was going to get a host when i got closer to finished.

I guess this is a good time to ask this question also then: Ive heard good things about Perl and im not knowledgable at all about PHP/MySQL or ASP, nor am i knowledgable in the differences between an NT box or Unix/Linux.

Can you offer me any input on which way i should go?
This is my first site so i think it should be as friendly as possible to me heh.

I bought an ASP book i havent broken into yet, though i plan on doing so as soon as possible.

The best would be to check out this site: http://cgi-resources.com/
there you'll find Poll It. This is best polling CGI-script I know which additionally is free and features almost everything you need.

    Also this site: http://www.hotscripts.com/
offers a huge variety of interesting and free scripts.

If you want free hosting, you may want to go to http://www.freeservers.com/

I currently host my site at http://www.cihost.com/ with UNIX/LINUX. I would also suggest you to take unix/linux it's just more stable and most scripts are based on unix systems. If you can pay around 20$/month then CI Host may be the best solution. They offer quite everything for reasonable low prices.

if you have PHP/MySql Vbulletin is the way to go
www.vbulletin.com It is extremely easy to set up, you really just gotta fill in a few blanks.

For the form mailer, go to www.cgi-resources.com and look for remotely hosted scripts that do this, there are a bunch of free ones, and to use them all you need to do is edit your form HTML code.
