Unhappy Cloud Hosting - To Me a 'Blackbox'

Cloud hosting is still a 'blackbox' to me ... hope anyone can answer me. I have 5 questions to start the discussion with.

    What is cloud hosting?
Is it cheaper than (shared/dedicated/semi-dedicated) server hosting?
    Is it secure?
How many SSL license I need to purchase if I host my website (one website) in cloud?
Which cloud hosting you recommend and why?

I read one of the comments. The major issue/reason why people have doubt in cloud hosting is security. How secure is cloud hosting? Esp. when it our websites involve 'sensitive' clients' data like credit card numbers. How to handle this issue?

    Hi,

The answer would be "as secure as you make it", providing you choose a provider that isn't doing anything stupid - At the end of the day, it's ultimately your job to make sure the data is secured, the same as it is with shared hosting or even dedicated hosting. For credit card details that means strong encryption, firewalling, and many more items (PCI-DSS is what you need to be compliant with).

Unfortunately for all your questions where you're wanting a yes or no answer, the answer can be both, it really does depend on the provider in question. I know that doesn't really help you, but unfortunately that's the way it is.

As for SSL, that really depends on your provider of SSL services and on exactly how you're running things. Are you scaling on demand, is it just load balanced virtual hosting? There have been a number of offerings lately of people jumping on the "cloud" buzzword bandwagon when it's really just load balanced virtual hosting, with some services split off on to their own servers - Nothing really new.

    Thanks,
