    What the?!

This is what gives us all bad names.

I go to a humor website, and they pop up tons of topsite popups. I close them about 5-10 times, only to have them re-opening. I finally closed one, it pops up some program, downloads it to my computer, DISCONNECTS me, tries to reconnect me (acting like my regular ISP), and then attempts to charge that call at $3.99 a minute.

Arghh. I've also heard companies are installing scumware through these popups.

How come it managed to install a program without your 'say-so'?

How can they install scumware through popup windows?

Also you should download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware (www.lavasoftusa.com) to make sure you delete all that junk. It found 11 scumware programs/links on my site, and I had just run it last week!

I have no clue how it did it.

I already have AdAware. It found 41 possible files that were scumware, but some were cookies from DoubleClick, FastClick, etc.

how does it give us a bad name?
In a world where the human mind
can be programmed like a computer,
at what point does the human soul end
    and the cybernetic machinery begin?

Our visitors will start to lose trust in our sites if they keep getting scumware programs installed on their computers, or if they're getting that $3.99/minute thing.

They can very easily install scumware through a popup window. Its another microsoft security hole thanks to activex.

Its considered a virus or trojan, the California Attorney General is looking into charges against the company who did it (I think they're host pulled the plug on their website). If you do a search for koolkatalog.com you'll find articles on it.

    Yikes!

I saw that popup ad back in April, and it was one of the very few ads I look at. I even played the game a couple of times.
