Server gone sloth...

Recently my website began experiencing huge and irritating levels of slowdown...Sometimes it takes 30-45 seconds to load the index page. I checked the server load, which reads generally between 20-25 between 8 CPUS...checked the shared IP address and found that my site shares an ip with 338 other sites...

I pay Australian$15 per year for the domain name
and Australian $169.95 per year for hosting...

It might very well be that you have to upgrade to a VPS. Your database is over 1 GB, so I assume that you have a somewhat large site. It may be that you've simply grown too large for your level of hosting.

I agree with your point here...as the site is on shared server you might face slow site browsing issues at peak times.. as the resources of server are shared by other sites as well.

If your site is not loading optimally you are not getting a good deal regardless of what you pay. Furthermore a server load in excess of 20 is unacceptable even with "8 CPU's". Optimal load per CPU is widely considered to be below "1" for each CPU. Based on your information your server load is running between 2.5 - 3.13 per CPU. Such loads should be limited to one or two spikes per day or system updates. They should not be sustained loads.

Last but not least if your server truly has eight CPU's it cost your host an incredible sum of money to build, lease and/or maintain it. Perhaps it's a VPS. Either way the only way they will be able to realize a return on their investment (ROI) are to oversell it. Which means at some point you will have to share the server with thousands if not hundreds of websites. Each of whom maybe consuming more or less of the resources you need for your site to load optimally. I suspect your situation will only get worse because the host must oversell that server to realize a ROI. However before jumping ship I suggest you express your concerns with your host and ask that they move you or any sites adversely impacting your server's load to another server where the same will not be an issue. If that's not possible or results in no improvement I suggest you find a host with a business model that does not require them to oversell their servers.

Err... they wouldn't have to oversell to make ROI on such a server (A server of that spec doesn't cost a lot at all these days), it's a choice they make to oversell, not something forced upon them. It does however sound like they might be putting a few too many accounts on the server - or if it has just suddenly come on, that one particular customer is doing something they shouldn't be. So the first port of call should be to talk to your host about it.

I'm in agreement with Karl. Share the load stats with your host and ask them to move you to one of their other shared servers. If that doesn't improve the situation, it might be time to move, or bump up to VPS/dedicated hosting for more resources.

Given the amount of data transfer that he's pushing, it is unlikely that a VPS or something even larger than that would be needed. All he needs is decent shared hosting.

Dan is right. Many people on their start apply for the dedicated server when they can be suit with decent web hosting account (shared) and that is always good idea to come to the forums and ask for the some help
