    .org domains

If someone uses a .org domain that is really a commercial site - no non profit - a strictly commercial site - will Google not index the site? I had a call from a potential customer that should not have a .org domain and wants me to optimized the site (it would need to be totally redone) but is there a point with the wrong type of domain?

    Dotty,

That HAD BEEN the intent with the .tlds but I believe that has gone by the wayside. I think your "potential customer" is trying to sell you a "bill of goods."

The customer has an .org domain, the OP thinks it may be a waste of time to try to optimize the site because of that.

No one is trying to sell anyone a bill of goods here, especially not the potential customer.

With that said, Google doesn't care what the domain extension is, at this point in time.

The .org is ok to use - as far as the question of being indexed by Google. Using the .org TLD won't hurt them, but it won't help them either.

I have a couple of .org's in the top ten in Google. They aren't non-profit.

Google consider web sites and content there. And it doesnot pay any attention on the domain name extension used for which web site. Just content should be legal.

We do not see any problem with .org whether it is page ranking or profit-company

The international TLDs - those that can only be used for the purpose for which they were originally created (such as .travel) and those that can be used for anything because the appropriate tests for being able to obtain such a domain in the first place were never implemented (eg. .com and .org)

Some countries have implemented the appropriate tests for their second level domains that are missing from the corresponding international TLDs and so in Australia for example .com.au amd .net.au can only be used for business sites and .org.au can only be used by specific types of not for profit sites.

But .org has no registry restrictions like .gov or .edu tld, also it's not necessary that all organization are Non Profit.

I have a .org site (sprint ringtones) in my signature. It performs well in both google and yahoo. I don't see any problem with it.
