I am not an IT savvy and I only have 5 sites.
I email them for more info what I did wrong
Well, all my emails went unanswered.

They do not even have the courtesy to explain to me or give me an
opportunity to have my sites up until I transfer.

Why would anyone host at DH is beyond me?

Their CPanel is not user friendly and very difficulty to transfer and manage.

Fact is, live support is often enough manned by Level 1 techs with little or no decisional authority. You'll end up being told to contact the abuse department.

The good thing is that you'll be able to vent.

My new hosting company is located in the same city and I know where they are at and their location and phone numbers and talk to them on the phone.

Best of all, supporting the local economy.

The worst thing is ignoring all your emails---now that the worst customer service!!!

Can you tell us a little bit about what the site in question was about? To be honest it is the first time I have ever seen such a thing in a AUP and first hand my guess would be they are a provider offering a lot of resources for next to nothing and you actually used more than the average 100MB of bandwidth per month site thus being 'everely detrimental
    effect on server performance'

In short sounds like an excuse to can you to me but I would still be interested to know what your site involved.

True, it's not the kind of terms you find all day, and it's not the first time they use them to suspend accounts. Personally, I find that it isn't a host's job to keep the search engines clean, especially as the white/black hat rules are so open to personal interpretation.

I've never understood that. With any other service you'd get a warning before being dumped to give you time to make a back-up and make preparations.

But it seems to be the norm in the hosting business to dump first and ask questions later.

That why I am sharing my bad experience with you all about iDreamhost aka deadhost or dyinghost.

You know I'm probably going to do that. Problem is, I think most of my local options are resellers.

I've read of a couple of hosts that ban you simply for using anywhere near their stated amount of acceptable bandwidth or server resources. Overselling FTL. And that scares me shitless with 6 commerce and CMS. Like I said, good thing I do monthly backups.

Ouch! It'is a truly frightening. As a customer we are really a priceless.
They so haphazardly to the customer. How can a quite-well company can do this bad things.
Our position is too weak in this case. The solution is like Mitch900 said, "BACKUP & BACKUP"

This is always good advice, it's a legal agreement that you make when you sign up - you should at least know what you are agreeing to.

Is DreamHost giving you backups to your sites or did you already have some (I didn't see mention of it, maybe I missed it)

what has TOS got to do? Does anybody read TOS and TOS changes all the time w/o your knowledge.

Best now, my sites are hosted in the same city and I know those people-support the local economy and have live tech support.
DH only have email support, it is a one way street and they can ignore all your emails.

Phew...I sure learned my lesson fast.

Wow... so they didnt even allow you time to backup your stuff? That's kind of harsh. I was with them for 2 years. I liked them.

Search engine spider activity can (and DH has a history of asking customers to block GoogleBot), though there's no relation between that and the type of hat you're wearing when doing your SEO work.

It is all pretty surprising from a host that otherwise has no trouble hosting very controversial sites, which are much more likely to cause trouble.

Actually black-hat SEO can cause Google and the likes to blacklist an IP if it's bad enough or rampant enough on an IP which is why I think they prohibit it. BlackHat SEO is generally doing things you're "not supposed to" to boost your rankings in the search results by manipulating the system.

It's quite a bit more detailed than this, but I can understand why they wouldn't like it. I don't see why they won't give you a backup however.

Well now, it's not like Google doesn't know that there are other 2000 sites sharing that IP (in Dreamhost's clustered system it can happen). Penalizing an IP would take more than a couple of scraping sites. Besides, DH is not complaining about the technique in itself, but rather the supposed CPU usage it results in.

The point is what did I do wrong? I have been with them since 2001 and have less than 5 sites. WTF!!

I had my account closed for other reasons but now I'm glad I did. I keep seeing so many unhappy costumers who use/used them for hosting.
