Flash sites that look like HTML...

    http://www.kontain.com/#home

    http://blog.refsign.net/#/index

They look brilliant, no doubt... but they would look pretty much EXACTLY THE SAME if they were done in HTML/CSS/AJAX.

It's odd as well, because you can copy text, etc. There's even an HTML source code for SEO reasons.

Makes you wonder why they didn't go that route in the first place...

    Thoughts?

They do look very sharp and the UI effects are very good and snappy. I agree that the same layout + effects could be accomplished with a good Javascript framework such as JQuery along with heavy use of AJAX and/or AHAH. And indeed I believe sticking with XHTML would be of use to improve SEO value.
As far as why they did it in Flash, I'm not sure, why not ask them?

I think it's marketing strategy. It's more complex and expensive to develop full-flash blog/social network. In other hand it's exclusive service

The HTML version is in there for users that do not have flash installed, as well as SE's I would think. Disable your flash plug in and visit the site (top link), you should see the HTML version.

I looked at the first one and all I saw was a blank light grey page. Extremely user unfriendly.

Did you give it a few seconds to load?

Looked at both, and found it extremely annoying that I have to wait for something that could have been loaded much faster and had exactly the same look and feel.

Guess the old "because we can" routine took over common sense...
