    I just started with Kevin's tutorial. After installing Mysql on Win 98 & PWS I wanted to change the root password as shown in the tutorial.

    This is what happened.

    C:\mysql\bin>mysqladmin -u root password "my password"

    C:\MYSQL\BIN\MYSQLA~1.EXE: unable to change password; error: 'parse error near '
    SQL_OPTION password='0f0dbe0300330c1b'' at line 1'

    C:\mysql\bin>

    Any suggestions?

    Hmm very strange. I've never seen that before. Try these steps instead. They should have the same effect, but go about it in a different way:

    <UL TYPE=SQUARE>
    <LI>Log into mysql.
    <LI>mysql&gt; use mysql;
    <LI>mysql&gt; UPDATE user SET PASSWORD=PASSWORD("my password") WHERE User="root";
    <LI>mysql&gt; FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
    <LI>mysql&gt; EXIT
    </UL>

    The next time you log in, you'll need to enter your password.

    Thanks Kevin,

    I'll give that a try tonight.
