how many hours sleep can you survive on?

Just lately I've been living on around 3 hours sleep a night. It's currently 3:36am in my timezone.

    Thank god for coffee...

    Goodnight...

About 2 hours sleep is enough for me to go to work the next day and make it...until lunch.

I'd say about 3 hours minimum to function properly.

    Now that it's summer,

    12 hours everyday

I can, however, work with 6 hours (if I have to).

I can live off of 4 hours of sleep in one night, but that would require some solid rest the night before and/or after.

I feel noticibly tired if I sleep less then 5 hours a day regularly. One thing I noticed is I usually follow this pattern:

    - Go to bed normally Friday
    - Wake up late Saturday (sleep in)
    - Go to bed late Saturday night (not tired, so I have a hard time falling asleep)
    - Wake up late Sunday morning
    - Go to bed late Sunday night, since I wake up late Sundays mornings
    - Have about 5 hours of sleep Sunday night
    - Tired all of Monday

So essentially I repeatedly try to rest well for the weekend and I end up doing the opposite. I'll never learn

No matter how much sleep I get I always seem to nod off at uni in the java lectures

I've had a couple of time where i've just gone for 48hrs without sleep (mainly because of assignments being due and/or parties )

I'm a bit like bahta really. I'm learning but I still end up like ruining my body's schedule on the weekend by going to bed way too late friday, waking up too late saturday etc. This makes it impossible for me to go to bed on sunday night at a sensible time so I always wake up monday on not enough sleep. I usually really need 8 hours at least to function properly, but that's regular sleep. I can go one or two nights with five or six hours but do that constantly for three days and I'm totally shattered all day long. Ideally I'd like to get nine hours to really feel okay.

Of course it's different if you're partying on the weekend but if I'm just going to stay up typing then I really need to stop being stupid... or "nerdish"...

    Yes more parties I think!

    more than i'm getting :-)

the past few weeks, weekdays have been 11:30 - 5:30 sleeping, weekends its usually 4am - 10am sleeping etc...but i definatly need more sleep

today in our english lesson, we were watching twelfth night (on one of our cool giant tv's) and i just nodded off where i was sat for 30 minutes, then when i woke up everyone clapped :-)

Back in the UK, I was always late for work which normally begins at 9am. Frightening thing is, here in Switzerland, work begins at 8am and some days I get in at 7(!) get 1 hour to think before the distractions. Basically here life is more chilled - less stress and I have more energy and don't need so much sleep. In London it's a different story...

    But I once got a good explaination of sleep which basically went like this;

While sleeping, your brain basically goes into "defrag" and sorts out all the new memories from the day. If you don't get enough, things like memory start to get real confused (plus health detiorates etc).

So if you're studying / learning stuff, you should get at least 8 hours. For working (which is a no brainer we all know) 6 hours is enough.

But it gets more complicated... apparently people also have "sleep cycles" which vary from person to person. The cycle is the variation between deep and light sleep. For most people that cycle is either 1.5 hours or 2 and it's a good idea to wake up on a multiple of your sleep cycle (for me it's 2 - if I wake up after 6 or 8 hours, all is cool. But if I wake up after 7... don't get in my way !)

My sleep time has gradually decreased ... I get by with about 7 hours now, sometimes a bit less. In the summer, I sleep late into the morning.

Here's links to a Commonwealth Club of California speech and interview with sleep disorder specialist William Dement . Very interesting. Anyone who feels like they get away with less sleep than they might need should listen to it.
