AFAIK, free wordpress.com blogs are somewhat limited as to what you can do with them. But one feature is the Integrated stats system, which may provide you with information similar to what Google analytics would provide.
Perhaps it would be possible to use the Google analytics plugin if you paid for the premium features (perhaps not), but if you host your blog on your own domain you will not have the limitations involved with the free hosting.

As far as I know, what you are trying to do is not possible. I could be wrong. Where did you read that you could do that? Can you revisit that source and see if you can find out a little more?

You can do what I did with my blog.

Go to Footer.php file of your blog and insert the Google analytics code in there. It will work absolutely fine. I am using it on my blog without any problem

if you can edit the HTML then you can add it into that, wordpress.com limits wordpress for their blogs.

If you pay them some money you can do more, not totally sure about adding Analytics though. Can't even edit the css unless you pay, last I used them.
