    Its as simple as that!
However It also popular because of the flexability that It provides to the webmaster.
This is true. Not only was the code simple, at first, visually they had a tasteful uncluttered look. I'm not sure how WP came up with the "code is poetry" idea, but I think that fits. Although the Kubrick theme they switched to for a while (for the default) was a cheesy, in my opinion.

However, I believe the #1 reason it is popular today, WP was bundled with Cpanel along with a couple of other blogging scripts. I'm not sure about Plesk, but Cpanel really opened web hosting to many more people, that is probably still the case today. So the "one click" WP install was what did it. Now that Wordpress auto-upgrades itself, a one-click install makes even more sense.

There are other reasons too, but you already knew that ;-)

Plugins, yes, but WP basically uses ping-o-matic like any other blog program, in fact you don't even need a blog to ping yourself.

That is true. However, these days Ping-o-matic pings all the other ping services. So while maybe it's tempting to ping multiple services, you're only adding more work for yourself, slowing down your blog without any benefit.

It's a matter of preference. Personally, I opt for Blogger, who has the backing of the biggest and most successful company on the Internet.

It's may be because wordpress' CMS is more functional compared to other blogging platforms...You can make a professional website out of it. But I noticed nowadays that blogspot is making more improvements.

What i like about wordpress is that it is scalable and widely used by many. There is a huge community for support which is important for anything software or script that is open source. The plugins can really have your blog do some dynamic things. Websites are becoming obsolete because of Wordpress popularity. It's the number one choice for bloggers and for those that are looking for a good content management system.
