I was writing a description of a new site needed to my programmer. But came to think that there must be many people who have the same need. So I am hoping that you guys know of a solution/product that could solve this need.
Database features needed:
Situation:
We have a increasing amount of data accumulation in Excel and across a number of computers. So a common problem is to located the most recent data.
We would like to store this data on a online database, from which we can:
* Access and view data
* Change data
o By manually data typing.
o By uploading Excel sheets with data.
* Extract data
o To excel
o Should be easy to select the needed data, also save often used data extractions.
* Easy back up to home computer
* Inexpensive to expand with new parameters.
* High security.
* Different user profiles, with different access.
The Sharepoint solution could work. Do you know how much a license costs?
Does there exist other solutions, where we can save files on a server? I assume that the solutions works as if the server is just an extra harddrive in "my computer".
Sharepoint itself is free if you already have Windows Server licenses, but the Office Excel Server is pretty pricey (at least last time I checked) and requires SQL server (which you might already have, if not, it is also pretty pricey).
Sharepoint can be mapped to a drive, but looking at your requirements, the trick isn't saving things to a central location but rather all of the aggregation and pushing back out requirements.
