    The Planet Review

I have a P4 Celeron 2.0 Ghz server with The Planet & I've had pretty smooth experience so far. The best thing is the prize that I got because I ordered the server from the Bargain Bin.

I highly recommend The Planet to anyone that is looking for a dedicated server.

The server alone is $50.00 a month plus I added Windows 2003 R2 and Plesk so that's an additional $35.00 per month. It's a great bargain IMO. The only downside is that you cannot upgrade bargain bin servers, you would have have to pay full prize if you ever needed to upgrade.

The server I have only has 1GB of RAM which should last me for a while before I need to upgrade.

Just make sure you have your own backup. That kind of server is using old hardware, and it can have trouble anytime.

So they gave you a dedicated server for $50 a month? Do they allow proxies? Are they overselling by any chance?

Obviously the server can not be oversold however the bandwidth and support can. Even in that case, $50/month is still a competitive price as long as they can maintain a 99.75+% uptime. How often do they have servers in the bargain bin? I remember checking another companies bargains bins for a while, they always listed items which were always out of stock. And anything they had in stock in the bargain bin was close to standard price.

I have been with TP for 5+ years and have been with Rackshack/EV1 through there transisiton to what is now all TP.

The network seems very solid and I have always gotten a better level of support from them (minus a few snafus over the years) than other providers I have tried such as Layeredtech, Fastservers and a few others so it has always been worth the extra price to me.

I do have a few servers at Layeredtech just so I do not have 'all my eggs in one basket' but overall I would say TP is the best of the three I use still and would recommend them to anyone looking for an unmanaged box as I can not comment on any server management services they may offer other than server monitoring.

I have about a dozen servers from them now and have probably been through 50+ over the years including the almighty raq4 for $99/mo I first started with back in 01'

Indeed it is a competitive prize but I did get lucky because I was refreshing the page at https://www.theplanet.com/servers/outlet.aspx and as soon as I saw the server pop up I had placed the order before anyone had the chance to.

Prior to this I had a server hosted at The Planet with the same specs & hardware for about 1 year & I was paying around $130.00 a month for it.

I never had any problems with the previous server & I have not experience any problems yet with the current server. Also with the features that I have on the server I end up paying $90.00 a month.

    Smile

I checked this outlet, no more bargain like $50/month at this time. But it is a great place to hunt special deal from the planet.

As far as I know, there aren't any $50 dedicated deals now at TP, are there? $50 is truly a bargain with a dedicated server at TP, even unmaanged.

We were having many servers with ThePlanet and they had provided old hardware (RAM, Hard Disks) to us. I would recommend to ask them for this.

Their bargain bin means they will give you the server with old hardware. Your hard drive may crash anytime !! So, beware.

    Exclamation

I was looking for options to help me reduce hosting costs. I tried The Planet and was so upset with them I terminated the account right away. The still placed an unauthorized charge on my bank card which I had to dispute. They quoted me one price to set up the server then started to ask for more money to complete the setup. They never got me a working login to Plesk. In short they never delivered a workable server to me yet charged me until the end of the month based on a credit card authorization form than had expired.
