    HOW TO install MySQL (mysql-5.1.30-osx10.5-x86_64) on MAC 10.5.5

    I have purchased book about building databse driven sites, i am trying to install mysql on leopard 10.5.5, PHP is already installed and activated with leopard, but i cannot seem to follow instructions in book. when i run the file /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe, i get this code : /usr/local/mysql-5.1.30-osx10.5-x86_64/bin/mysqld_safe ; exit;
    081226 12:44:49 mysqld_safe Logging to '/usr/local/mysql/data/Macintosh-6.local.err'.
    touch: /usr/local/mysql/data/Macintosh-6.local.err: Permission denied
    chown: /usr/local/mysql/data/Macintosh-6.local.err: Permission denied
    081226 12:44:49 mysqld_safe Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/data
    /usr/local/mysql-5.1.30-osx10.5-x86_64/bin/mysqld_safe: line 96: /usr/local/mysql/data/Macintosh-6.local.err: Permission denied
    rm: /tmp/mysql.sock: Permission denied
    rm: /usr/local/mysql/data/Macintosh-6.local.pid: Permission denied
    /usr/local/mysql-5.1.30-osx10.5-x86_64/bin/mysqld_safe: line 133: /usr/local/mysql/data/Macintosh-6.local.err: Permission denied
    081226 12:44:49 mysqld_safe mysqld from pid file /usr/local/mysql/data/Macintosh-6.local.pid ended
    /usr/local/mysql-5.1.30-osx10.5-x86_64/bin/mysqld_safe: line 96: /usr/local/mysql/data/Macintosh-6.local.err: Permission denied
    logout

    then any other steps don't work, i dont know very mcuh about databases, and i ma having trouble making it "work" ! or follow steps in book, i think b/c book is using older version of mac os and of MYsql! can anyone help!!!

    ????
    thanks

    Justin

    Sounds like you need to start it as a root user.

    Edit: Looks like Mac uses the 'sudo' command, so this would be a good place to start...
