Talking Need A Laptop - Good One Too!

    Hi,

As it is, I have been accepted into the United World Colleges program, which means that in September I'm going to be leaving home to go to the college for two years. I need a laptop to take with me, that can serve as a desktop replacement, but also be light and useful.

    Any ideas?

    I just need suggestions.

Also - I dont know what my price range is, I guess somewhere between 1600-2200$, but if you find something at a higher price, tell me.

Everyone knows I love my Dell laptop.

If you are interested in a Toshiba Satellite I am selling my old one so I can buy a Vaio (for travelling purposes).

The problem with Dell is that the Inspirons are too heavy and the Latitude mobile one is too pricey (to get what I want it goes up to 2800$).

    And thanks Glen

Yeah, I love the Vaios. My father has a Picturebook and my sister just got a new R505 Superslim, which is what I think I'm going to get (just 6.4lbs with the dock)..

    Over 1ghz proc
    256mb ram or more
    30gb+ HD

    that kind of power.
Normal video would be nice as well.

Yes Dell's do get hot. Mine is like a little oven especially if I am just popping into work I tend to stick it in my bag and leave it turned on.

I am getting swayed on the Vaio for the Latitude C400 <swoon>. You want to see the price in the UK comapted to the US though, it is nearly a third up, I should have bought one when I was over there!

I'd like to broaden my question to this:

What do you think I should have in such a laptop?

    Processor wise, memory wise, everything.

Remember that this is going to be my "Desktop" for two years to come, with no change in the middle, and I need it to hold and and qualify for all my needs at a boarding school.

Apart from Processor/Memory, I'll list out these:

    1. Shouldn't heat up too much.
    2. Should have long battery life.
    3. Should be light.
    4. Should have a good quality video screen (I've seen screens where you can't even make out colours)
    5. Should have enough periph. slots for you to use almost any pluggable device with it.
    6. Should have support for separate mouse attachment (sometimes you'll hurt your fingers using the touch pads)

Have you considered an Apple? There's an iBook thread revolving around here somewhere (too lazy to find it), and the general consensus seems to be that Apple makes excellent laptops. Just throwing out another idea -- I am too in need of a laptop and I am considering Apple as well as many other brands like Dell, Sony, Fujitsu (touch screen!), Toshiba, Compaq, et cetera.

I would consider a laptop - but I unfortauntely I am a Window's user. Too many of my programs are for windows only.

You might consider a laptop from the "light" or "ultralight" class. Very thin, very light, yet still powerful enough for any task. VAIO makes great ultralights from what I understand.

    Dude, Your getting a Dell!!!

Dell is the only Laptop I would buy. If you want the look of the Vaio but want to add in stability then get the one of the Latitude class machines.

If you want the bulk of a Compaq or IBM but want stability then get one of the Inspiron class machines.

If you want pure ruggedness then a Precision mobile workstation.

I have used Sony, Compaq and IBM laptops before and nothing beats a Dell. It is the only laptop I would purchase. Pound for pound, spindle for spindle, battery for battery, pixel for pixel - Dell outclasses them all. Not only that but you get support added in on top of that. Something that is hard to get with the other companies.

I agree, after you have had a Dell laptop you will fall in love with them. Their support for me has been great. I got a callback on a battery because it was part of a batch where one had caught fire on a user so they replaced it AND sent me an extra free one so now I have 4 batteries! To tell you the truth I only ever use 2 of them but it was just the way they handles it that was nice.

Dont talk to Qslack about dells

I've used one a fair bit, it has a nice 15.7 inch screen and its real heavy...

My dad somhow managed to slice his finger on the catch the other day... dont ask me how

They're solid though, not like other brands like Acer which i swear would snap in half if you typed to hard.

If you can afford it, go for it

I am considering the Alienware Area-51-M Notebook. It's a bit on the expensive side (configured it with what I want for $3,002.00), however, compare what you get with any other maker (including Dell), and you cannot beat the price. 2.4 GHz P4, 512 Mb RAM, 15" SXGA+ Screen, ATI Radeon 7500 64 Mb Graphics Card are just a couple of things I opted with ... the list goes on and on and on and on.

You absolutely can't go wrong with a Dell Inspiron. I've had mine since December, and I love it. I couldn't go a day without it.
