Question January Shout Out (two parter) What's Your Geeky New Years Resolution?

Lots of folks make New Years resolutions every year—to lose weight, spend less, and make more. Our January Shout Out is a two parter. First, looking back at 2008, what resolution that you made last year was successful and second, "What's Your Geeky New Year's Resolution?" In plainer English, what will you do to make your work as a web entrepreneur, programmer, designer, etc. a success in 2009?

I haven't come up with a good one yet, so I'm hoping to get some ideas from you.
Last year my resolution was to grow my business (and I did ) and lose 20 pounds (which I didn't )

My resolution was to knuckle down more on my school work instead of spending alot of what-could-be valuable time doing programming and sitepointing.

I couldn't - until more recently. That's because my GCSE results weren't that good (2 A*, 3 A, 3 B, 1 C, and a C in an A-Level) and I have high standards, so those were a real let down. Mainly the reason was because when I could have been revising, I did spend alot of time distracted by a website I had been building. So, I had a shock-to-the-system and decided to really put alot of effort in this next couple of years.

So I've had to cut down on my sitepoint and development activity alot recently, to fit in revision etc throughout the year. In a way I've followed my new year's resolution - just 9 months late

This year's I think will be to build on that. I'm taking on extra work this school year - I get taught Chemistry, Biology and Physics, but because I'm doing Further Maths ontop of Maths, I'm going over twice as fast as the others in my year - Where they're taking 1 paper in January (Core maths 1), I'm taking Core 1, Core 2, Mechanics 1 and Decision 1 this January.

And, as I'm aiming for 5 A-grades (top grades) in A-Level, I need to work harder!

So, my new years resolution is to build on my current focus and try harder in school.

Last year's was to grow my business. I haven't.

This year it's going to be to fundamentally change my business, something is wrong with its roots - turns out it's a bonsai tree, but I want a 100 feet oak tree.

I managed to keep my business although I teamed up with one of our colleagues but it didn' work out...I managed to save some money but ended up paying it all on my brother's college...and I didnt lose weight...

This year

- focus on my personal business
- save money for myself
- buy a good laptop
- open an international bank account

I didn't make any resolutions for 2008. I was too busy being awesome.

Going into 2009, I'm really going to need to streamline my work processes, delegate time and start using to-do lists. So that will be my resolution.

I don't think I made any resolutions last year :|

This year though it will be to take it one project at a time - I have the tendency to start multiple projects, get halfway through all of them, and finish none of them.

My resolution this year is to aim high and stay focused. Last year I left as a blank canvas, and wouldn't you know it, I got a Global Financial Crisis as punishment

There's a tough life balance for the home based business owner. We've worked hard to build our business over the last couple of years. It's time to let the systems pick up a lot of the weight so we can spend more quality time with the family. I guess if I had to declare a resolution, that would be it.

My resolution would be to work even harder at my business, difficult as I already often do 14 hour days but I shall try.

Being that I'm getting kicked out of the Navy for being chubby (oh well), I'd like to start in a job that I actually enjoy, that pays the bills, and that is in New York. I'd also like to lose a bunch of weight (the equivalent of my 7 year old).

A long time ago I stopped making those resolutions. I rather look at things as they happen, as attention is needed.

My new years resolutions:
• Finish and launch my product, InvoiceMore, and start making some serious money by building a business out of it.
• Make my wife and new son happy by being there when they need me to be, and giving them what they need from me
• Put my home gym back together in the garage and actually start working out again (get fit/lose weight)

Last year: Stop procrastinating. I did really well for awhile, but now I'm bad to being horrible and it's biting me in the butt at the end of the year.

Next year: Three simple letters: OOP
MySQL v5.1.58
PHP v5.3.6

Last year's resolution: decide what to do after university and get a job. This has been successful. Another one was to buy nice clothes and learn to dress a bit better. This has been quite unsuccessful.

My "normal" resolution this time around is going to be to learn to cook more interesting and delicious food. I'll probably fail at this. My geeky one is to sink my teeth into MySQL.

Redesign my blog to something that embodies me and what I want to post about.. not an easy feat..

Join the gym and continue the cutting down on ciggarettes which has been going good- just need that extra kick of bodily action to supplement it

To refocus on coding as opposed to design (which was this year's main resolution )

Didn't make one for 2008, but this year mine are to:

- save £2k for a holiday or two by June
- create a portfolio of flash games by June, which i shall reward myself with the holiday

Finally master jQuery, learn how Adobe Air works and finish my own portfolio website (has been on the list for the last years...) together with some of my other projects.

I'm also planning to stop doing freelance work, at least untill I have completed my own projects.

I will be going back to spinning twice a week, couldn't do it for a long time because I had trouble with my knee. But since I had knee surgery last week, all should be back to normal in a month or so. Really can't wait to be able to sport again like I used to. My knee was really holding me back!

And I should make sure that I save enough money to move back to New Zealand by the end of 2009 / early 2010

Tijmen, that reminds me. I also want to save up so I can move elsewhere. New Zealand is up there in my top 5 places to move to.

I only spent 10 days there and it rained most of the time, but I loved it all the same. Peru, Australia, Tanzania and France are up there too, in no particular order. Most places in the world I probably wouldn't object to going to! If only travelling wasn't expensive...
