    Chat idea???

    I found this chat at:
    http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/261216

does anyone know why the text messages are so quick? I want to make a quick chat like that but dont want to store the messages through a mysql database or textfiles cause they are so slow, i want it kind of like irc so they appear straight away as soon as u press enter.

This isn't answering your question, but I'm not a fan of how messages are posted in a steady flow. One of the few telling "nonverbal" cues that you can interpret in textual conversation is the timing between messages and this eliminates any sort of variation.

There are many things that affect communication. Having a good broadband connection is one of them, the amount of server that the data pass through is another... Having a good server and good programming is another...

I don't see any speed on this chat, furthermore, the few posts that I read speak of a fake chatroom... so maybe the speed is that is a fake

Simple - it's fake and simply adds your own comment into the mix which isn't difficult really.

I haven't tried that service, but it obviously makes sense to use a server side language and AJAX. Good programming does speed up the storing/retrieving of information to/from the database, but AJAX will help to get things smoother and make them look faster.

But the use of PHP implies that you are storing the chat somewhere.

My first answer would be yes. AJAX is, after all, only text, and the loading time would depend more on the graphics that you use than anything else.

Flash is a vector tool, so its compression rate is really amazing, but there are graphics, after all.

There is a Javascript library for graphics, Raphäel, but I haven't tried it, so I am not sure what kind of effects you can do with it.

Well, there is nothing faster than a txt file but this would mean that the storage will be done for a short term, maybe a few days. Maybe the option should be given to the chatters, and you should save nothing, meaning that the conversation will be in the RAM memory while they are chatting and automatically deleted when they leave the chat.
