    Design Changes...

So, I have made some changes to the design of my personal site and I was wondering, does making changes to your websites looks affect anything to do with SEO?

I understand adding content and what not can improve it, and re-doing a whole site can trash your standings on google and other search engines, but do design changes affect it?

I don't know what algorithms search bits use, but I guess it depends on what you change. Things like background images, padding/border/margin, color, etc. probably not at all. But if the semantics of the mark-up change, i.e. things like title, h# tags, and the order of the text, then yes.

If you're just changing the appearance of the Web site (ie: not touching the code or content), you should be fine. As Mittineague said however, making changes to the code and/or page copy can affect your rankings in the search engines. The same holds true for site architectural changes as well (where your pages are). If you're going to change file types or locations, make sure you use a proper 301 redirection setup to forward the old URIs to their new locations.
