    Firefox Deleting My Cookies Everyday?

    Hey all,

I am having a bit of an issue with Firefox that I'm sure just must be a missed setting. Anyway, it's Firefox 3.0.4 and it is deleting my cookies every day. I have to login to every site every day and I can't figure out why.

In Tools > Options, I have these settings:

    Privacy:

    Cookies:

    "Accept cookies from sites" checked.
    "Accept third-party cookies" checked.
    "Keep until: they expire"

    Private Data:

"Always clear my private data when I close Firefox" unchecked.

If anyone had any ideas or suggestions, that'd be great. I appreciate your time.

    Thanks,

    Patrick

Are you absolutely certain that it is Firefox clearing your cookies and not some security software running on your system that is doing it?

The culprit for this is more likely some anti spyware/malware software.

    Hello,

    Thanks for the replies.

No, I'm not certain. The only thing I know is I go to view my cookies in Firefox and they aren't there, unfortunately. The only thing I have running as far as spyware, etc., I believe, is Norton Internet Security. And maybe Ad-Aware 2007 as "Ad-Aware 2007 Service" is in my system processes, though I can't recall it ever doing anything. This doesn't happen with IE7 or IE8, though, so it seemed odd that it would happen in Firefox?

    Thanks,

    Patrick

Thanks internetSurfer. I'm not really having trouble viewing or management my cookies, just in them not remaining. But, I appreciate it.

Just as an update to this, it seems to be time based, not in the sense of days, in hours. For example, the sites I visited yesterday morning all require me to login again. But, the sites that I visited late last night before going to bed, I am still logged in, to those. So... weird. Someone suggested that I reinstall Firefox over itself, so I have done that and we'll see what happens.

    Thanks,

    Patrick

Is it just one or a small handful of sites? Have you looked at the expiry dates of the cookies?

    Hey SpacePhoenix,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, no, not really. It's my own forums, it's forums run my other people, including SitePoint Forums, it's other sites I login to, like reddit or Sphinn or Mixx, etc. There isn't a common denominator.

As far as expiry dates, I haven't, but I wouldn't think that would be it because I could stay logged into these sites on IE forever and the SitePoint Forums cookie wouldn't expire on a daily basis, etc. nor would the other sites.

    Thanks again,

    Patrick

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, that's true. But, I don't think the cookie expiry dates would vary by browser. It's still happening. I guess I am going to try a full reinstall next.

What extensions do you have installed in Firefox? Could it be one of those that is affecting how long the cookies are being retained for?

Just thought that I would mention that running Firefox in safe mode didn't do anything for me. Frustrating.

Is the "Ask me before clearing private data!" ticked? I'm using version 3.

Oh, and also what does the "Keep my history for at least: ??days" have set? 90?

Sorry to double post but if you have the default settings then have a look at this thread at Mozilla. About ten posts down there may be a possible solution.

    Hey spence_noodle,

Thanks for the replies. "Ask me before clearing private data" is ticked. I have history set to 5 days. History shouldn't be tied to cookies, should it?

That link looks interesting! I'll try that. Thanks.

If you apply these settings and cookies are still being deleted
I would suggest you do a reinstall deleting all files.

    In Firefox go to:

    Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies:

    Check Accept cookies from sites
    Check Accept third-party cookies
    Keep until: they expire

    In Firefox go to:

Tools > Options > Privacy > Private Data > Settings:

Uncheck: Cookies > Offline Website Data > Saved Passwords > Authenticated Sessions

Or you could just uncheck Always clear my private data when I close Firefox.

    about:config editing

Type about:config in the url bar and scroll down
and edit these registry like settings for Firefox.

    network.cookie.lifetimePolicy - set this to 3
    network.cookie.lifetime.days - set this to 3650

Thanks, internetSurfer. I have all of those settings except that I haven't done anything in about:config. The variables there now are 0 and 3, respectively. If the link spence_noodle gave doesn't work, I'll try that next. I have reinstalled the browser both over itself and after complete removal.

Unfortunately, deleting that sqllite file didn't work. I am going to try adjusting my settings as internetSurfer suggested. Thanks.

Unfortunately, adjusting the settings didn't work, either.

    Open to more ideas.

I may try FF 3.1 beta 2 when it comes out to see if that does anything.

This site explained it and it worked!

Sitepoint wouldn't let me post the link, but google search for 'cookies.sqlite' and find a link to site: ghidinelli

I wouldn't bother recovering old cookies. A lot of them were corrupted in some way and the sites wouldn't work at all until I deleted the cookies and started over.

Just close Firefox and rename cookies.sqlite.
