Sorry, what do you mean 'if you owned GOOGLE you would have no power'. Surely Google have a fair weight in the online community, or did I miss something?

Hes saying how google has taken over everything there is.The internet is 'Google'.It controls every website.Think about it Google has all the power on the internet.

I think you have to have a passion for it in the first place and from 1999 I started wondering how all these things work and I even like the idea of having a website then I went from there to make sites.The fact that you can work when you want and be your own boss is priceless!

Perhaps you may want to add more info on your question?
It's basically too general so you cannot get a specific answer.
If you will ask our fellow web designers and or developers why they choose to be one, you'll surely get a generic answer of it is because it's their interest and or it is because they think they can express their arts in web designing and or because programming is a challenging task and so on and so forth.
Money isn't always the reason I bet you. Money will only be involved once they think that they are good enough to earn something from their interest or when somebody pushes them to think about their financial gain.
