Well...one of the most obvious ways is to build up a decent list of followers and send out tweets every time you update your site.

I think the best thing with twitter is to become part of the community. Use the search tool (at bottom of twitter) to search for potential readers of your blog or users of your service and follow them. Also... try tweetlater.com for automated following and you can set up thank you's for when people follow you.

Basically, you want to be part of a twitter social scene and then when you need to post something that includes a link to your own site, they'll listen to you!

Hope that helps. Google 'Twitter secrets' for more info.

creating a community; creating contests on twitter especially for promotions/brands; it works well; maybe does not bring as much traffic as other social networks, but I reach my goal.

Adding lots of people just to follow you is not going to get you the traffic you want. You want to target an audience. So, try searching for people that you might actually be interested in and then follow them. Respond to their posts, get to know them. And then you will see the hidden treasure of twitter.

Make frequent updates to a large amount of followers. Also, if running a blog use a plugin to auto post to Twitter.

I primarily use my @successwalls account to post content related to my topic (success and motivation), as well as posting updates that are too trivial to make a full blog post on my site. I also use it as simple notifications when I have new content posted.

My other twitter account (which is the one I use in my sig here) I simply use more for personal reasons.

there are as many ways to use twitter as there are people in the world

it seems a popular way to use it is the "rush to gain followers", much like a lot of facebook users do

if your system worked for you on myspace or facebook you just have to adapt to the smaller space on twitter

I suspect another variation will pop up as soon as people get tired of 140 characters limitation

Do you really consider this a limitation? I consider the 140 character max a plus, it makes people get to the point.

"twitter for marketing" is just as good a use for twitter as any other purpose. It's there for what you need or want, and it's free.

I haven't found any 'gold' laying around yet for me at twitter ( or elsewhere for that matter). So I have no insight as to what does work. However, you can bet that people are making money from it. Usually from supplying tools and advice.

Buy I wouldn't go out and buy any ebook from some clown who says they are!

And yes, 140 is a limitation in my view. It likes saying "what up" a million times a day without adding much substance. Even so, I can see where it could be helpful in cases where short communication tidbits is all you need.

But again, if it's what you want and works for you, then GO FOR IT.

Twitter profile rank well in google so this is good for rep managements and getting your social network spread out.

I did some tests with twitter for a few sites, but the results were rather disappointing. Twitter doesn't bring any reasonable amount of traffic even if you have hundreds of friends and do constant updates. So I'd say just get a link, add some friends and leave it at it. Don't waste much time on it as it won't pay off
