    Having trouble with favicon icon

    Howdy!

    I've been messing with putting a favicon on my website and can't get it to work. I've put the correct code in the head, favicon image in the root directory and still have issues. I believe that it has something to do with ftp'ing the favicon.ico file but I'm not sure. I can change the path for the href to sitepoints root and the icon displays fine, but can't get it to work locally. My web hosting DOES support favicons.

    When I ftp the image (using fireftp), it shows up in the folder on the server but it doesn't display the icon for the file itself, meaning, in the list of files in the folder, the small icon displays next to the filename on the local folder but not in the server folder. Hope that makes sense.

    Is there a certain ftp file transfer setting I should be using?

    I tried both versions of code I'm familiar with. This one is the "shorter" version.

    IE often need to use a "favorite" bookmark before saving/showing the icon. Maybe the type attribute is of help too? w3.org-favicon

    Works for me using Firefox 3.0.3.

    As someone already mentioned you could add in the 'type' attribute which would be as follows:

    Code:
    type="image/x-icon"
    Or perhaps use an absolute link to the icon in case there is a directory issue here?

    However, difficult to know if either of these will help at all, as there certainly doesn't seem to be a problem from what I can see given your example.

    It's also showing up in Opera, and should show up by default in IE 7 as well. What did you use to create the favicon.ico file?

    Try this code:
    <link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

    it worked on my website for IE7, FF2+, Opera, Safari and Chrome
