Yea, the good old Basques. Most people know about the flat hats they wear, the cliché artist caps.

    Like Jan. Boring.

I usually get Jane and don't really bother to correct them unless I know I'm going to see them again.

I like my first name, simple but sounds like a name of an antagonist woman in a film- Clarisse

@ Datura, your name sounds like the popular brahmin in a Japanese Mecha called Daimos.

An English mate insists on calling me Tom, but other than that people don't have any problems with my first name.

English-speaking people can't pronounce my last name (Olsson) properly, though. They usually can't even spell it right, and seem to think I'm Danish (Olsen).

I get Helena a lot instead of Helena but over the years I've given up worrying about it. Mostly these days I'm addressed as Muuuuuuum! (to get the effect right the "uuuuu"s need to start high, go downwards and end up high again.

Do you mean Ulrike? I always thought that it has a Japanese ring to it as well

In your case it means the son of Ols, right? Correct me if I am wrong

You described this perfectly. I hear that sound a lot in the super market. Kids hanging on to muuuuuuuum and pleading to get this or that.

    Yes(ish). It's really a short form of Olofsson, i.e., Olof's son.

You know, I grew up in Germany. Of course I was exposed to your language a little bit through restaurants in my area that were of Slovak origin. So I know what it sounds like, but I do not understand it

This is an interesting question D.

But let me ask you a question as the OP. Do you think people should change their names to reflect their ideas of themselves?

It's interesting that changing your name is not something that common place in society, but it seems on the surface to be the most logical way of being 'named', no?

I prefer to be called Andy, when my name is Andrew - so, the most common way we 'change' our names is by choosing the most suitable diminutive if one is available.

No Andy I do not think that they should. But if a person is unhappy with a name they were given, I see nothing wrong with changing it. There are many reasons why a name might not fit, and if you are unhappy how you are being teased or the name is hard to say or or or, then just change it. It is easy enough to do and you might be happier.

You might also want to change it for business reasons if you do not want to run the business under an assumed name. I myself regret that I did not start my silk business with another name. The customers have a hard time with it.
