    Smile Given Name

The other day I was trying to tell a person how to say my given name: Ulrike. It is a tongue twister for most people that are not German. It gets at times frustrating because people avoid addressing me because they do not know how to say my name, even after clearly repeating it many times. I just tell most of them to use a short version of this name like: Uli, Rika, etc.

Have any of you experienced difficulties with your names? Do you like your name? Have you thought about changing it?

I like your name too... "oolrick"...

I have trouble with the E at the end, though.

No with my first name (although English people need to say it twice or more times to get it right)... Now, my last name... that's a whole different story Not even Spaniards get it right

I swear, it is not that hard

Yeah, it annoys me when people say or "Rafi-ell" when the name is clearly "Rafael". But what bothers me is when people spell it "Raphael" even when I've emailed them already and I clearly sign it "Rafael" and the sender says the same thing! It's just a small courtesy to show, getting someone's name right, but so many people manage to mess it up.

    No one gets Sarah wrong.

I don't love it or hate it. It's not a name that you get teased about, but it's boring.

To make things worse, my surname is Taylor. When people look me up in their systems I am usually one of about 10 Sarah Taylors.

None of the others have Hawk as their middle name though.

    You suck. You're last-name rules!

I have it on my list of coolest last-names... together with a Romanian programmer I met who's last-name was, "Avournicesi".

If you want cool-sounding surnames, look up people from Madagascar (President: Marc Ravalomanana, Prime Minister: Charles Rabemananjara) or Indonesia (President: Susilo Bambang, ex-President: Megawati Sukarnoputri).

Oh, and I do like my name, just not when people get it wrong (but that's normal, I presume).

I know a man called Sean who used to be Shaun. He changed it because he hated how people got it wrong, and he preferred Sean anyway, especially after seeing the zombie film!

Do you think they address each other with the full name? Maybe when you are used to it it is alright.

No idea. "Mega" doesn't sound very presidential though.

Great minds think alike! And go on Shaun, you can edit it into a woman! Also remove one of the Ts. Maybe it'll get printed in an Indonesian newspaper and suddenly the whole country will start boycotting Trinidadian products as part of a giant political storm in a teacup!

If you wanna see a really cool last name, look me up on facebook, you won't even know how to begin to pronounce it.

My first name is fine also. Everyone seems to pronounce it right without much trouble and they usually don't misspell it. And even I like it.

Well, thank you Shaun... still... you realise that it is written in the oldest and most primitive language in Europe... so primitive that it didn't have any grammar and could not be written till the last 20 years (they are making them up right now)

They most definitely. We have names worse than that, and we address each other with the full name daily and with no problems whatsoever. It's you foreigners with your tiny three letter names that always have problems

So molona, since you live with this primitive name, do you dress accordingly?

I'll have a stab at it: "Chernyaushkash" (as pronounced from the point of view of an English speaker). Is that close at all?

Darn it Rafael, almost. Except the two s's are real s's, not sh's. And the yau part should probably be yaw, depends on how you pronounce that in English. Quite frankly it's hard to explain in words.

I don't even think that they got to that point... these people were too rudimentary even for druids... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basque_language
