programs used for webdesign

Hi again guys ...
My teacher said: Frontpage is for amateurs ..
so i checked websites made by frontpage and tried validating them and indeed they r not valid ..
but what r programs that professionals use for design and stuff? there r so many programs in the market like:
Photoshop, dreamweaver, flash cs3, ..
how effective are these programs? or could u as a designer and web developer better avoid such things and just stick to html and css?

I only use plain text html/css
Gives you full control of everything happening on your website.

If your starting out then the best idea is to create your pages from scratch so you learn the code by actually working with it first hand.

EditPlus (has tabs, syntax highlighting and code snippets), CuteFTP, and Photoshop are what I been using for years.

Dreamweaver is good for streamlining the whole process, but I suggest staying away from Frontpage and anything involving WYSIWYG edit or drag and drop designing.

If I have to choose a WYSIWYG editor, I would go for DW. Still, I only use it in code view, and never the design view.

I don't think that Frontpage (or Expressions, which is its current name) are bad per se. All WYSIWYG editors need to be configured properly because default configuration is never suitable. My main issue with them is that you learn how to use the program and not what you are doing.

My suggestion is that you start with a normal editor and learn the basics well. Then you can go with any other and be able to be in control of your designs.

I have started with only Notepad with a HTML tutorial to get the basic things done. I then moved to GoLive CS1 on which I have designed my first few sites. Later I used GoLive CS2 and is currently in DW CS3. DW helps to balance tags etc and is standards compliance.
I agree that the code view is the best view in DW to perform control over the code.

as for now i have been using: notepad++ (i love it) and some photoshop .. thats all ..
but i can see there is a big difference between what i do and what all other sites contain .. i do put codes and stuff .. codes are easy to make .. but the idea's and displaying the site more professionally is the main problem ...
becoz at college they only teach us the basic of html and css .. and basics of photoshop .. thats all ..

That's a good thing - unfortunately quite rare these days when most courses seem only interested in teaching people to use WYSIWYG packages like DW or FrontPage etc.

The overall design of the site has nothing to do with using DW or anything else - you can make a great looking site using Notepad and a horribly boring site using Dreamweaver. Unfortunately it's up to your skill and experience to do that.

Personally I'd suggest an HTML editor like Araneae or PSPad which is one step up from Notepad - just a few things to make life easier such as line numbering.

If you're think you're okay, still keep using notepad.
You can keep your code way neater that way.
