Well, I just majorly screwed up and almost got banned. I hadn't posted for a while and I had forgotten the rule about not being able to create a new username to effectively change my username. Instead of requesting the one-time name change through a moderator as per the rules I just registered a new one. To everyone, please do not do what I did. Thanks for lenience on me this time Shyflower, I know I'd deserve whatever I got. This forum is an excellent resource and I'd hate to lose it.

Also, just to be clear, JediCharles does not refer to Scott Baio being in charge while wielding a lightsaber as someone thought on another forum. Joanie may love Chachi but I do not. My name really is Charles, I just wish I could control the force a little better than a first year padawan.

Well.. *my* funky username came from my own name. How cool is that?

The other name I tend to go by is Katalysticat, derived from Catalyst, which transformed into katalyst, and well the cats I know are pretty sexy.. so Katalysticat.

Mine came from my first name (Tim = Timbo, obvious really ) and when I joined the unofficial message board of my AFL team Geelong (yes, the one's who ballsed up this years Grand Final, for those of you who follow the game) I wanted a name that would fit, so I took "thecat" being that Geelong are "The Cats". Therfore, Timbothecat. My cousin, who is also a member of the board, loved the name and said, "you should always use that." So, now here I am. I haven't found any other message boards/forums where it's used but it was used as a gmail name so I had to add a number to it.

<---- as in "Who's she? The cat's mother?" and also I had a cat.

Also variously known as "danceswithcats" from a silly night on IRC, and "sleepytigercub" from being nuts about the Esso tiger when I was a kid and having a poster above my bed. My mum used to tell me I was a sleepy tigercub when she was tucking me into bed....awwwwww!

Mine is a childhood nickname my sister had for me. I don't know exactly what it means 'cause she never tells me, but it seemed like the natural choice when I started using the Internet 12 years ago and needed a nickname, heh.

wow, what a way to start posting in a forum I've been lurking for almost two years...

Mine comes from the book(s) that had the biggest impact on me, when I read them 15 or more years ago - "Ender's Game" (and "Speaker For the Dead") by Orson Scott Card.

One of the concepts in the whole story is the Hierarchy of Alienness with four groups of "strangers" (for which the Swedish terms were used): Utlanning, Framling, Ramen and Varelse.

Varelse are strangers from another species who are not able to communicate with us. They are true aliens, completely incapable of common ground with humanity.

Utlänning means foreigner.
Främling means stranger.
Varelse means a creature or a being.

I'm not familiar with the word 'ramen' in this context. It looks like the determinate plural form of 'ram', which can mean a couple of different things: frame; or the front paw of a bear. 'Ram' as an adjective can also mean 'pure' or, archaically, 'black'. I think it meant 'raven' in old Norse.

The author has slightly simplified the original terms, getting rid of the umlauts.
As claimed in the books, the terms come from Norwegian (I'd rather say Scandinavian though) planet of Trondheim... Licentia poetica
Sometimes instead of "ramen" the "raman" form is also used.

Very interesting thread and it's nice to see the creativity and science of username-choosing unfold with the great personal stories.

Mine is not anything spectacular.

I am always looking out for profitable ventures, startups, etc. to acquire and scale up,

so fancy myself to be somewhat of an investor.

From that idea, I chose NVestor.

That's not simplification, that's distortion.
Ε, Δ and Φ are not just accented characters in Swedish; they're proper letters of their own right. So writing 'utlanning' instead of 'utlδnning' is like writing 'foraigner' instead of 'foreigner'.

My username comes from the word "Acme" - which means at the top or highest point of something. I want to reach some top points of knowledge, innovation, ideas and obviously energy. So i came up with Acmeous.

Mine was originally JimmyPaddy which I thought sounded way to Irish so I asked admin to shorten it to JimmyP ... Nobody actually calls me Jimmy (in the 3D world) but I kinda like the name, it's my favorite "rendition" of James (which is my real name) ... "P" is the first letter of my surname!

Perhaps I should have been more imaginative when choosing it!

For whatever reason, my name, 'Lee', always just evolves into 'Miss Lee' at some point. Everywhere I've ever worked, family, friends; not all the time but it gets used in conversation fairly often so I just went with it. Not terribly interesting.

For a while I've wondered whether I should change mine to "Jake Arkinstall", which I'll probably get sorted after the nominations and voting of this year (Don't wanna cause confusion ).

You WOULD cause confusion if you won an award and change your user name after that
