    Flash video compression, and preload?

    Hi,

We have a 5 second video clip we want to use for the intro of our site.

What are the best ways to compress a 5 second .mov file for .swf web?

And also, is there a way to just show the 1st frame, whilst preloading the rest of it, 'til the vid gets to about 50% loaded, then start playing the full clip?

    Many thanks for any thoughts.

If something has to 'preload' for 5 seconds worth of content playback it's doubtful it's worth having on there to be honest. But if you have to put it in there, your idea to show the first frame while waiting for the remainder to load is probably the way to go. Embed the clip in the timeline (make sure and use on2 vp6 codec to get it crunched down smaller) then have an onFrameEnter function and a stop() in the first frame, when getBytesLoaded()/getBytesTotal()>0.5 do a play() to start playing. You could also do it with an external flv but it'd be a bit more involved code wise.
