    Sourcing photos/images of current news

I'm looking for somewhere to source photos of current news events (mainly political) for a client's website. The client needs to be able to quickly search and secure photos of news that they will be commentating on.

I found Fairfaxphotos but hear that it's expensive. If anyone can suggest any other sources that would be superb. An Aussie focus is preferable, but global sites would be useful too.

sxc.hu is updated very frequently and have a huge database of great stock images is very affordable. I am not sure whether they cover a lot of news images or not, its worth a check though.

bigstockphoto.com is pretty cheap too and seems to have some photos from current events. Also, the Creative Commons Search is pretty interesting, though not sure how accurate.

For this kind of things you're best off with PR Photo's (used to be photorazzi).

They have a great coverage of events and are inexpensive compared to some other sources.

    Thanks, some good stuff there.

PR Photos looks good as a first option for cheap shots, particularly for US news.

That's great, they've got really good coverage of international news. So many others focus on one region or country alone.

Definitely worth searching to see if anything decent comes up. Thanks. I understand there's a fair bit of ambiguity with creative commons licencing, which has gotten people into trouble for using them commercially... is that what you mean by not sure how accurate it is?

hey I reckon gettyimages is the best place to source photos. The pixels are great quality and all is very good. It may be a good idea to register definately else you need to pay. If you register when you save the pics the watermark disappears if you don't register the image will still have the watermark on.

There are a lot of great suggestions here. For a client, I would steer away from Creative Commons licenses or public domain sites. First, it is nearly impossible to be certain that the photographer was the really the person uploading the photos. Even if he or she was, if you read the license, you will see that many do not cover commercial uses.

Fair enough. It's risky business I suppose, as Virgin found out.

This may or may not work, I've had varied results, but if you are looking to get permission for copyright, Copyright Clearing Center may be a good source.
