From what I can see, Mozy isn't free ($5/month). And no, I wouldn't save back-ups remotely anyway.

Well 2GB is quite a lot. I save my back-ups to CDs, and although limited to 700MB, it has been adequate. But I suppose if I ever had a larger file, then if I trusted the site, I would think about it. Then again my shared server provides some space for backup files too, so maybe not.
Of course if my compter was larger than 8.5GB I might think differently too.

Amazon S3 is not free but it is cheap and reliable. They store data on many different servers in different locations.

I read that some big companies decided to save money on expensive backup system and they started to use amazon S3 instead of keeping backs in internally.

Amazon S3 seems to be more reliable then backup disk. As backup disk usually has 1 copy of backup.

    not even if it's free

maybe if you pay me to use the backup service, i might

i give the same answer to newspaper salespeople who call me -- "i will only take your newspaper subscription if you pay me, to cover my labour cost to haul the newspaper from my front door to the blue box"

there's no way i'm backing up anything important to somebody else's server

i might consider backing up non-important stuff, i.e. crap, but then, you'd have to make it worth my while to do that

I've never heard of that company/service, but if someone's free, I wouldn't trust it (I wouldn't trust a lot of paid services either, to be fair). Someone that's willing to host your personal, private and sensitive data for free, sounds suspect to me. Not that they are up to no good, but who knows about their intentions or how much they care about security of your data from prying eyes/malicious people, since the lack of fees paid doesn't usually indicate they care a lot about the quality of service.

NO. There is no free lunch in this world... For starters, the website offering the backup service can go out of business. and your data, needless to say, disappears into thin air.

Definitely not. It raises all sorts of challenges, both to my client confidentiality and simply ease of use. I only have a 2mb/s pipe with which to retrieve my backups as needed in any case. There's nothing like incremental backup to a portable HDD, especially with USB/esata drive caddies becoming increasingly cost effective.
