I am transitioning from Frontpage & PaintShop to CS3. I purchased a Dreamweaver template to have something to play with and to get the feel for all the editing and layer controls.

The PSD file that came with the template had a complete layout including text and graphics. My guess is the text was there because of the fonts used. I also noticed in the Photoshop layout the template author used 178 slices. I did an export of all the slices and the slices didn't make sense. The slices were everything from nicely cut out menu items to vertical strips on paragraphs in varying widths which I found to be odd.

Is this a normal practice? If so what is the benefit or has the author made this needlessly complicated?
