    Is it a game?

span is inline semantically neutral tag.
Technology is dominated by two types of people:
those who understand what they do not manage,
and those who manage what they do not understand.

<span>...</span> is a semantically neutral inline-level element, as blain said. Think of it as the inline equivalent of <div>.

There's also a span attribute for <col> and <colgroup> elements, but I assume you meant the element type (although you posted in the CSS forum).

Also, remember that span tags are used within block-level elements.
Usually, people use span tags for hiding text or styling text.

Another use for span elements is for marking up changes in natural language:
    Code HTML4Strict:
    <p>Semantics is my <span lang="fr">raison d'être</span>.</p>
