HTTP PUT - what is it?

Does anyone know what the HTTP PUT is about? I've been looking for information on this, but have been unable to find it..probably because I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

I imagine that just as there is a HTTP GET, to GET a document from the web server... there must be an HTTP PUT, to PUT a document on the web server.

Can someone point me in the right direction?
