Word Press Registration Plug-In?

Hi,
Have a friend with a nice big yacht he wants to rent out to a number of friends of his. He would like a website where these predefined users could check to see when it is available to rent and then using a calendar or something, book it for a number of days so the other people could see when it is free or when it is taken.

Is this something that could be set-up with WordPress and some plugins? Not just anyone can rent it, so I've seen plug-ins to make it a password protected page, or I think there are plugins for logging in to a site. I would also need to have a feature where the user could book and save which days they wish to rent it, so a calendar would show the availability and who has rented it. Is this possible with WordPress, or do I really need some kind of other solution like php/mysql?

Yes, you could setup a Wordpress blog to do this, and even provide pictures of past rentals to those people. Wouldn't be a hard task at all.
