Expanded Div which changes images on mouseover

I know that on this site the navigation is flash based, but is it possible to do this with plain old html, css and some form of javascript.

I have looked at various accordion menus, but each one that I seen involves basically a section that moves or slides rather than just the div remaining in place while an image changes when mousing over the links.

That looks a lot like the second demo at http://dev.jquery.com/view/trunk/plu...ccordion/demo/
with a hover on each link updating another section of the page.

Just one question concerning using an accordion. Usually with an accordion the mouseover or clicking the link causes the additional content to display either directly underneath or beside the link, is it all possible to position the content away from the link?

I have yet to see this done so I have always been under the assumption that it was not possible.
