Best way to make 1000s of pages XHTML compliant?

    Hello,

What is the best way to make 1000s of pages XHTML compliant? Is Tidy the only option?

    Thanks

I suppose that depends on the state they are in now. If they are valid, semantic HTML 4.01, it shouldn't be much trouble. But if they are pre-HTML4 tag soup, then you might not be able to do it automatically at all.

Just use a language like PHP that has a "tidy" extension to loop through all your files and re-write them. Or get the stand alone version of "tidy" and write a shell script.

I saw a JavaScript app that would convert even the worst HTML tag soup into valid XHTML; albeit served as HTML, but still...

I'll see if I can find it (validating it would be a great first step towards converting it to valid HTML 4.01).

With so many pages, I assume a template or multiple templates are involved? I believe Dreaweaver has a 'convert to...' function.

Maybe run the templates through that?

Re. dreamweaver - I was thinking if each page (I'm assuming they're all dynamic pages) is made up of several templated elements eg header, footer and so on, that you could just convert these files.
