This isn't a new issue, IE always used gamma correction while the other browsers ignored it. So really IE is following the spec of the PNG format. However, gamma just does not work on the web.

It should be noted that Firefox 3 now supports PNG Gamma Correction. Correction make that color profiles.

I made a erroneous mistake, I should have conducted further research.
Internet Explorer ≤6 also renders PNGs in a slightly incorrect color gamut. If a GIF and PNG image of several colors are placed side-by-side on a page, a user can often see a slight difference in color. This is due to an incorrect handling of the gAMA ancillary chunk.
