Why Does JavaScript have no version?

If I look at PHP5, MySQL4, CSS2.0, XHTML1.1, how come I've never seen anything like this for JavaScript? Is it because it doesn't change anymore?

I may have seen JavaScript 1.2 I think but I can't remember, is it ever updated? I have never heard anything about it!

Very interesting question. I've used Javascript for years and never really thought about that.

    What's new in JavaScript 1.8 - http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs...JavaScript_1.8

Draft roadmap for JavaScript 1.9 development - http://www.mozilla.org/roadmap/gecko-1.9-roadmap.html

ECMAscript (the standard on which JavaScript is based) is currently at version 3 which corresponds to JavaScript 1.5, the new version 4 of the ECMAscript standard still in development corresponds to JavaScript 2.0 - http://www.ecmascript.org/docs.php

Internet Explorer actually runs JScript rather than JavaScript and the current version there is 5.7 with version 5.8 being developed for IE8.

Exactly which version of JavaScript/JScript a given browser supports is most easily detected by using feature sensing to determine whether the required feature is or isn't supported. Checking exactly which version that is being run is therefore never required and in fact can't be tested for - which is why you seldom see mention of JavaScript versions.
