I usually select "crisp" or "smooth", occasionally "sharp" or even "strong" - when a bit bolder rendering of the characters is desirable.
And of course "none" for pixel fonts.
Sometimes, when I'm not satisfied with one aa-a method, I mix them by cloning a layer with - for example - "sharp" and changing it to let's say "crisp" then I lover the opacity of both to the desired level. This way you can easily control the final look of your anti-aliased text.
