Where to store images?

Storing images on an external domain leaves you at risk of image searches displaying your image on a page other than your own, hence resulting in a loss of traffic for you.

For this reason I store all of my images on the domain of my sites.

Can someone help me out with this? I'm trying to host my own images. I made a new directory mydomain.com/images and I uploaded the picture there. But when I put in mydomain.com/images/pic.jpg in my browser, it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?
