    Google JS AJAX Library API

I was reading an article from another developer talking about possibly using Google's AJAX Library API to grab popular Javascript Libraries from Google instead of serving them off of your site.

Basically the idea seems that if many sites start using these shared libraries from Google that they will already be cached on the local users machine theoretically speeding up page loads. The end user will then not download the same jQuery, Prototype, MooTools,... files from each individual site.

What are your thoughts on this?

Good idea as far as it goes, but what if the Google Code site is down? When I was using AdSense, I had page loads freeze whenever the AdSense site was down. It's best to have a copy on the same server as the rest of your site. That way, it won't matter if the user can't load the external JavaScript since the whole site is down anyway.
