    Question template size

I am just starting my design. Something that I have done NUMEROUS times before, and im sitting here thinking to myself...

what size should i start with?

    usually i start with 990w by 660h....

does that seem good? I mean, leaves room for the vertical scroll bar, and it should fit the screen alright for most screen rez... no?

Have you read The Definitive FAQ on Screen Resolution?
Also here is a good suggestion
Finally, you can also check the 960Grid System.

700w by 500h seems awfully small.

Few mobile phones have screens that are more than 400 pixels wide and a lot are much smaller than that.

The print version of the page will need to be no more than 750 pixels wide or it will overflow off the page.

Few people would bother having their browser open to a width of over 1000 pixels sine any wider than that and the lines become too long to read easily unless in multiple columns (and then there would be the inconvenience of having to scroll the page up and down several times to read everything).

A grid is way too inflexible for designing web pages since you need the page to be viewable at MANY different widths and that may mean that you will want the number of columns of content being displayed to change depending on the window width - and you can't do that with a grid.

im not developing for mobile... so i don't know where this came from. lol

as far as size goes, I think im just going to stick with my 990 by 660 because it seems to be working out fine.

no one is giving me any exact input... not really much help. hahaha

    sorry.

990px for the width sounds pretty good to me. Definitely workable with your average 1024x786 screen resolutions.

bbc.co.uk recently changed their layout from <800px to 974px width, there was a thread on it here somewhere you might want to try and find that one as well.

So all the other replies weren't any input for you, just the one that exactly agrees with your point of view. Good to know

    No No... Not at all.

The previous to yours and the one I actually quoted weren't much help.
I looked up the thread that you suggested. It has some good information in it as well.
    Thank you
