Could you post an example? I'm not sure I've noticed that feature. Thanks!

Actually it was introduced in IE 5.5 and I think the newer Mozilla and Netscape builds have adopted it as well.

i think that coloured scroll bars can have a positive effect on a website, but only if they fit in with the general colour scheme of the site.

Another cool idea with scrollbars is that if you dont want one visible, unlike the standard ie or netscape browser view, just colour all elements of the scrollbar to be the same as the background colour of your website.

    hey presto, no scroll bar.
    crafty eh.

They can look nice if they are fitted into the design (like sitepoint's) but it's the ones where people dont define all of their colours properly and the arrows or the scroller kinda get lost

Is Sitepoint's colored? It seems to be normal to me.

I absolutely loathe real colored scroll bars, even when they match the site colors. When I want to scroll, I look for the grey bar to the right that frames the page along with the top and bottom.

Mostly, to me, colored scroll bars look corny and annoying.

Kinda like the blink tag was.

I do like colored scroll bars and I am using them on my sites. I am looking for to the day where I can also integrate the color of the toolbar into my web site.

I've never been a fan. I'd rather not mess with the way a user has their software setup. Some guy spends ages setting up his UI widgets according to persoanl tastes or needs and then I come along and change it out from under him. Nah.

I think in some cases they look alright, however I mainly browse using a Mozilla browser, so donít often see them, however I believe CSS should be confined to styling within the browser window and not for the actual browser itself.

I really hate the colored scrollbars on the main window...

But if someone has a web blog or a different small type scroll box I think colored scroll bars give it class.

    Hopefully that makes since,

colored scrollbars? i like them... well at least when they're nicely designed and match the overall site design... heheh i use them myself... i feel they add an extra touch of familiarity with the website as long as they match the site colors (and don't look ugly)

It sure looks cool but once again we are dealing with browser specific extensions here. No respect to non-standard effects.

It looks pretty even for and against. Very interesting.
    </musing>

Anyways, I like them as long as they are done well. If I don't notice them nuless I need to, then they are well done. If my eyes instantly see the scrollbars coming into the page, there's a problem.

The main reason I don't use them and refuse to:
Even if only 1/3rd (or 1/4 or 1/10th) of the visitors to my site are annoyed, that's too many.
You do NOT want to drive away potential clients/visitors/etc. and by doing this you may.

Right now the voting stands at 10 people for colored bars and 6 people saying they are annoying. 37.5%! That's too big a segment to drive away.

90% of the time yes I do find it annoying. But there has been times when it blends so well that I can't help but like it.

I wouldn't say coloured scrollbars are useful as such, but they can improve the overall presentation of a site. I can't say they annoying, I mean they are scrollbars that are not the usual grey, wow how very annoying, for annoying check pop-up adverts.

I don't find it annoying most of the time. If it goes along with the color scheme of the site and there is a nice contrast between the top parts of the bar as well as the arrows, I like it. The only time it is annoying is when you get ones in all dark shades and you can't tell one part from another. That's quite annoying when you drag it to scroll - you have to squint to figure out what to drag!

I think they look great on some sites (like this one), and obtrusive on others. As long as they don't stand out that much they're alright with me.
