DHTML scrollbars too use or not to use?

A client of mine has asked for a scrollbar to be placed on the news section of his website. He also supplied me with some sample code - DHTML. I noticed that the sample code came from a site that was six years old! Has this method been deprecated and are there any alternatives?

Here is the site with sample code

I don't know about deprecations and alternatives, but that's a lot of code for relatively minor changes to the scrollbar. But, he's the client, and I suppose if that's what he wants, it won't hurt the site to give him the bars....

That doesn't even work in Opera - I have to manually drag the scrollbar in order to see the content below the fold.

    Try this instead: http://onlinetools.org/tools/domnews/

If he's looking for custom scrollbars (visual effects), then this would work well instead: http://www.hesido.com/web.php?page=customscrollbar
