    Validation problem with Blogger.com

    Hi, this is my first post on these forums.

    I am working through Ian Lloyd's "Build Your Own Web Site the Right Way Using HTML & CSS" (Great book, I'd recommend it to anyone!) and so far any problems I've had have been solves by these forums (which I'd also recommend to anyone!), but I've come across something that's brought me to a stand still in my continued nighttime learning.

    I am working on Chapter 9 "Adding a Blog to your Web Site". I've tried to validate my index page however I get a lot of errors, all of them, from what I can tell, are created from Blogger.com.

    "Line 60, Column 98: general entity "postID" not defined and no default entity."

    "Line 60, Column 104: reference to entity "postID" for which no system identifier could be generated."

    "Line 65, Column 290: end tag for "img" omitted, but OMITTAG NO was specified."

    "Line 60, Column > 80: XML Parsing Error: EntityRef: expecting ';'."

    ...you get the idea. If validating it yourself would help, here is my url: filiatrault.50webs.com/index.html

    Has anyone else come up against this problem or can tell me if there is a way to fix it?

    Thank you for any help you can offer.

    -Sean

    Hi Sean Filiatrault, welcome to the forums (posting-wise),
    This is a very common error. The ampersands in the GET variables should be
    &
    NOT
    &
    When the validator sees something like &postID it thinks it's an entity without the ending semi-colon. Change the "&"s to "&"s and most in not all of the valdation errors should be taken care of.

    This sounds as if you're using an XHTML doctype declaration and have a <img...> tag instead of a <img.../> tag.

    Thank you for welcoming me and for both of your suggestions.

    I do understand that the "&" should be changed to "&amp;" however all of the ampersands in my markup are being created by Blogger.com.

    For example, my error in reference to line 60:

    <BlogItemBacklinksEnabled>

    Turns into....

    <a class="comment-link" href="blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=1112764503246018668&postID=8340635744768985004">

    AutisticCuckoo: same problem as above. The "<$BlogItemControl$>" tag turns into:

    <span class="item-control blog-admin pid-599732833"><a style="border:none;" href="blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=1112764503246018668&postID=8340635744768985004" title="Edit Post"><img class="icon-action" alt="" src="blogger.com:80/img/icon18_edit_allbkg.gif"></a></span>

    I spoke to a friend of mine who recommend me this book in the first place. He suggested that I not worry about it because it's Blog software that I cannot control... It's a little aggravating because I just can't stand the thought of not being validated!

    P.S. I had to remove any "h t t p : / / w w w ." from my markup as I have not posted enough to have the right to make links in a post yet
