    Question Very Basic Problems

Working through Lloyd's book, I have typed the basic markup from pgs. 29-30 into TextEdit, then opened the file with Firefox, and it still looks like basic markup, not like a webpage. What am I doing wrong.

It sounds like the file is saved as text rather than HTML. Simply rename the file to end with .html rather than .txt.

The file is labeled basic.html, saved in the Sites folder, and was written in Plain Text.
I tried to paste the file here, but received a notice that it contained a link and was therefore rejected.
    Thanks for your reply however.

Have you used any style elements like background, font and color customization, borders etc.?

No. I just typed what was in the book. I am a Mac person. Would that make a difference?

The text include the usual DocType, <head>, <title>, <p> kind of markups - nothing more than html 101 kind of stuff. I made sure that the TextEdit document used plain text. Then I opened FoxFire and opened the document with FoxFire, but the document displays as a text file, even though the Foxfire icon is on the file.

No, there is no difference between using a mac or the others.

Are you sure you typed it all exactly like that? Closed all tags?

Just to make sure, here is a good thing to try. Go to the W3C Validator and put your address in. See if you made any mistakes: http://validator.w3.org/

It is so very easy to make a little mistake

What a great website. The file passed through the validator. No problems. Tis a puzzlement.

    Smile

I just repeated what I had done earlier in Text Edit, but this time used Text Wrangler. It worked beautifully. Thanks to all for your help, but some how it now works.

Oh I am glad. I do not care for Text Edit, I use BBEdit. Text Wrangler is good too. Keep on learning, in no time at all you will give advice
