Message to show that page is processing

In one of my point of my virtual point-of-sale apps, the app takes a while to contact the payment processor and get a response. I was hoping to show some sort of processing box withing the the page to indicate that the page was still "thinking" - similar to an hourglass on windows.

Maybe this would be activated when the the submit button is pressed. I know some people use AJAX for something like this. How might I get started?

There's no way I could do that even if the site was on the net due our NDA. I just wanted to learn how to display a loading/processing message after hitting a submit button on a form.
I got lucky and found some good tutorials in google.
Here it arefor anyone with the same question:

It's fairly simply actually. You can attach a javascript event (ie. OnChange) to the submit button and show some content in a div until the next page comes up.

    Thanks
