    Question Dimensions?

    Hi,
I am starting out a website in Photoshop CS3 and would like to know what would be the ideal dimensions I should be using (in Pixels)?

    Thank you

    Welcome to SitePoint Forums!

How long is a piece of string?
There's no 'standard' size for browser windows. More and more people use large, high-resolution monitors, but the larger the monitor, the less the probability of their using a maximised browser window.

Web pages should adapt to the window size (and the font size), with a maximum width to prevent overly long lines. That doesn't translate to pixels, I'm afraid.

Someone will probably come along and say that you should make your comps 750px wide or 950px wide or something like that. Those people probably use a 1024x768 or 1280x1024 monitor and a maximised browser window, and believe everyone else does, too.

Your best option is to stop thinking in pixel from the start. Think in em (character units) and percents.

Unless you are going Fluid, you need to pick a resolution you want to go with and support that resolution and larger.

Good luck and once you get the resolution done absolutely start using em for font sizes.

100 pixels wide, vertically doesn't matter because it will scroll

this is ideal because it will fit into all kinds of handheld displays, and of course larger monitors too
